Often the first step for building effective teams is honest evaluation of team breakdowns and problems. Avoid the trap of "fixing" people. People are rarely broken. Typically there is a problem in the systems and processes used to manage the team and related events.

The discovery process that guides the team in making its own improvements, revisions, and interventions is the source of the team's strength, versatility and identity. Team members are empowered and take ownership when:

  1. Elements standing in the way of team performance are identified and remedied.
  2. Processes are redesigned to directly address these elements as a learning experience.
  3. Wisdom thus gained is shared in what must ultimately become a learning organization that constantly improves.
Successful teambuilding techniques--that work and have a lasting, positive effect--are crucial if team-based productivity and self-directed work teams are your goal.

Our teambuilding work is designed to address team needs at any point in the spiral. Initially, some teams may need crisis intervention to move past on or more stuck phases. Teams may be mature or newly formed, cross-functional or project teams. The needs of each team are addressed by sets of exercises specific to its unique goals and purpose.

TS INITIATING- The Team SpiritÔexperience fosters a deep sense of trust, belonging and real connection among team members; these qualities are essential to team success. Every individual must feel needed, valued, respected and wanted if he or she is to be a fully contributing team member.
TS VISIONING-Team SpiritÔ enables the team to develop an expanded sense of its potential. Team members begin to envision what they can create together, begin to sense the possibilities for breakthrough solutions and for the delivery of unparalleled service. Teams realize they can accomplish far more collectively than separately.
TS CLAIMING- Team SpiritÔhelps a team develop solidarity and single-minded purpose. Individual team members are empow-ered to assume responsibility for the goals, roles, compet-encies and resources needed to realize their shared vision.
TS CELEBRATING-Team SpiritÔ increases team members' capacity to experience/acknowledge their appreciation for individual and team accomplishments. Often, this essential component, overlooked in traditional team building programs yet only by openly celebrating can teams sustain and renew themselves.
TS LETTING GO- Team SpiritÔemphasizes the importance of communicating clearly with authenticity and forthrightness, especially with respect to disappointments, frustrations or conflicts. Formerly withheld thoughts are valued as vital, constructive communication.
